About J1 League

J1 League, officially known as the Meiji Yasuda J1 League, is the top-tier professional men’s football league in Japan. It is organized by the Japan Professional Football League (J.League) and represents the highest level of competition in Japanese club football.

Founded in 1993, the J1 League has become one of the most successful and popular leagues in Asia, attracting domestic talents and international stars alike. Known for its high technical quality, tactical discipline, and passionate fanbase, the league continues to grow in global recognition.

Competition Format

The J1 League consists of 20 teams (as of the 2024 season). The season follows a double round-robin format:

  • Each team plays 38 matches (home and away against each opponent).
  • Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss.

Promotion & Relegation:

  • The bottom 2 teams are automatically relegated to J2 League.
  • The third-bottom team (18th place) enters a promotion/relegation playoff against a J2 playoff winner.

Continental Qualification

Top-performing teams in the J1 League earn spots in continental competitions organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC):

  • AFC Champions League Elite: 1st and 2nd place
  • AFC Champions League 2: 3rd place or Emperor's Cup winner (subject to AFC slot allocations and licensing criteria)

Top Scorers & Notable Players

Over the years, J1 League has been home to legendary players such as Kazuyoshi Miura, Shunsuke Nakamura, and international stars like Andrés Iniesta, Fernando Torres, and Leandro Damião.

All-time top scorers include:

  • Yoshito Ōkubo – 191 goals
  • Masashi Nakayama, Hisato Satō, and others are also among the league legends.

Defending Champions

The 2024 season champion was Vissel Kobe, clinching the title in a tightly contested season finale.

League Tier

J1 League is the top division of Japan’s football pyramid, followed by J2 and J3 leagues. It represents the elite professional level in the country.

Season Calendar

The J1 season usually begins in late February or early March and runs through early December, with a short summer break. The schedule is aligned to avoid overlap with the Emperor’s Cup and AFC competitions.

Stadiums & Attendance

J1 clubs play in modern, often football-specific stadiums located across Japan.

  • Biggest Stadium: Saitama Stadium 2002 (Urawa Red Diamonds) – capacity ~63,700
  • Average attendance: ~20,000 per match
  • Matches like Urawa Red Diamonds vs Gamba Osaka or Yokohama F. Marinos vs Kawasaki Frontale regularly draw massive crowds and electric atmospheres.
